about nmhc

  • India with a 7,520-km long coastline is home to the oldest known civilization in the world, the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC). Excavations over the last 100 years have led to more and more evidences of the once thriving IVC.

  • Though sites relating to IVC are spread over vast area, it is at Lothal that the earliest man-made dockyard was discovered during excavations at Lothal, Gujarat in 1957.
  • Corroborating archaeological evidences have proved that the Harappans had maritime trade and cultural links far and beyond the Indian coastline.
  • This tradition of maritime links has continued ever since, both from the West coast and the East coast.
  • Links as far as Mesopotamia and Egypt in the West to Japan in Far East have been found.
  • In a nutshell, India has a maritime history spanning over 4500 years.
  • It is with this vision of our Honorable Prime Minister that the MoPSW (Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways) has undertaken the solemn task of establishing India’s National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat.
